Beginnings
You begin by stepping out into the world.
You might just be hiding, hoping not to get wet in the rain.
There is an overhang on an old barn to shelter under until the storm passes.
As soon as the deluge stops you consider your next step.
Has it slowed enough?
Have the dark clouds passed?
You think to yourself,
What’s a little rain going to hurt?
Then a part of you imagines the road,
Now slippery and treacherous.
It is sure to ruin your shoes.
Reaching inside for courage,
Putting one tenuous foot in front of the other,
Tiptoeing through knees high, sliding along the way,
You soak your socks.
Cold wet feet send forth a shiver of doubt:
Then, to hell with it.
Nothing can stop us now.
